For my sisters birthday I made these delicious chocolate orange cupcakes. Chocolate orange is one of my favourite things, and I love baking.

115g Butter
55g Chocolate
40g Coco Powder
95g Self Raising Flour
1tsp Baking Powder
Pinch of Salt
2 Eggs
100g Granulated Sugar
50g Soft Light Brown Sugar
120ml Buttermilk
Splash of Vanilla Extract
1 Orange
1tbsp Icing Sugar

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  2. Melt the butter and chocolate together, either in the microwave for 30 second blasts or over a pan of boiling water, then set aside to cool.
  3. In another bowl mix together the coco powder, flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Then in a seperate bowl mix together the eggs, both sugars, and vanilla until well combined. Then Add in the cooled butter/chocolate mixture and stir well.
  5. Add in half of the flour mixture, mix well. Then half of the buttermilk and mix well. Repeat these steps until everything is well combined.
  6. Add all of the zest from your orange into the mixture, then half of the juice.
  7. Fill your cupcake cases until 2/3 full then bake for about 15 minutes, you will know they're done when you put in a skewer and it comes out clean. 
  8. Whilst the cakes are baking mix together the other half of the orange juice, the icing sugar and a dash of water.
  9. Once out the oven, prick lots of small holes in the cake and drizzle over the orange/sugar mixture. A little bit like a lemon drizzle cake. Then leave to cool completely.

For the Topping


1 1/2 Egg Whites (if you can)
1/2 cup Granuated Sugar
1/2 cup Butter
55g Chocolate
Splash of Vanilla Exctract

  1. Pop the egg whites into a glass bowl alongside the sugar and place the bowl over a pan of simmering water. Whisk until the mixture becomes opaque.
  2. Remove the bowl from the heat then add in the vanilla extract and continue to whisk until the mixture is cooled.
  3. Whip in the butter, little bits at a time, then fold in your chocolate and you're done.
